Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project Planning Guidehttp://www.eaglescout.org/project/eagle2.gif

“With Wings and a Halo – R.E.A.C.H. a Child!”  would like to invite any scouts who are in need of an Eagle Scout Service Project to contact our offices at (866) WW AND AH or 608-345-7074 and ask for Paul S. Gilbertson.  We have begun to implement the following plan for those scouts that are interested in helping us further the causes of our Non-Profit Corporation of reaching out to children in the time of a crisis with the gift of a Children’s Book given to them from a first responder, Police, Sheriff or EMT officer or volunteer.

The Project Plan is as follows:

A)    The candidate organizes a book drive in his hometown, whereas, he puts together a flier that describes what our organization does and  what dates and times he and his group of volunteers will be coming by to gather the Children’s Books that their neighbors are willing to donate. (Remember, we are trying to gather new or like new books for children, toddler to teen!)

B)    The candidate distributes the fliers throughout the local area with his volunteers and/or scouts from his troop.  He may want to have drop boxes in certain stores and gas stations, too.

C)    Following this first notice/flier (three to five day notice), the Eagle Scout Candidate (ESC), sweeps the area and collects the donated books that have been set out for the book drive.

D)    After gathering the books the ESC sorts the books at one central meeting place and screens the quality of the books, condition and category/age appropriate class of the book.  He and his volunteers then, place the official “With Wings and a Halo” Sticker and “Signature Label” on the front cover and inside front cover of the book, respectively.

E)     The ESC then coordinates the placement of the books (roughly 10-12 Children’s Books) into each red backpack and then begins the final stage of the process.

F)     This final stage is to contact the Chief of Police in his immediate neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods/towns/cities and explain the program to this Chief or Community Officer and then, distribute the “B.A.C.K. Packets” to the departments (one per vehicle).  Next, inform the officers that they are to hand out only one age appropriate book per Child whom they encounter at the scene of an accident or fire, or domestic dispute, or similar stressful situation.

G)    The ESC should also, contact the local media (Newspaper, TV stations and others) to help get the word out about what they are doing in their local communities.
